Cotton Candy Skies

"the sun is an egg yoke on a blue pink sky pan." i wrote those words over 25 years ago when i had a job delivering doughnuts at the crack of dawn. back in those days i drove a red van full of pastries to convenience stores and break rooms all around KC. it seems like i could always count on cotton candy skies to go with my coffee and crullers. last monday morning i saw another pastel colored sunrise as i walked to homer's. this view is from the northwest corner of 80th and marty looking east toward the medicine shoppe. the vacant lot is where the napa auto parts store and pizza hut used to be.

A Tale of Two Sisters

wilma henderson gave birth to twin girls on a weekday. everything seemed normal until the doctor gave the routine spank to make them inhale. as soon the as air entered their lungs a glow filled the delivery room, and their skin changed color. wilma thought she was the only one seeing the strange spectacle of crying luminescent babies until she realized the nurses were shielding their own eyes. she named her girls neon and dionne, and after a rough childhood the sisters moved to california where they became successful recording artists. hush tang was their first release on a major label which consisted of lullabies for migrant babies in the citrus groves.

Whose Musical Opportunity Is It?

jane (a regular thursday customer) read this note in a fortune cookie yesterday and shared it with me: "an interesting musical opportunity is in your future." she got it from ross, so that means i was the third person to read it. ross always orders a cappuccino, grilled cheese, and something with chocolate on thursday. this was the first time i'd seen him with a fortune cookie. the ironic thing about this fortune cookie note is that i (david cedillo) actually make musical opportunities for average people! it just so happens that i will have a music table set up in front of the culinary center next friday (april 17) at 6pm where pedestrians can play fruit, vegetables, and a theremin. the culinary center is within easy walking distance of homer's. if you're scratching your head and wondering how it's possible to play bananas and carrots, go to beep goes the weasel for pics, links, and videos.

First Time For Everything

beep goes the weasel was scheduled at homer's last saturday night. it was the first time vegetables were played on stage by the audience. it was the first time we played a moog theremini in public. and it was the first time we could all find the humor in an old school bus safety video.

Friday the 13th

today is friday the 13th, and some people regard it with the same superstition as black cats and broken mirrors. how do you observe this supposedly unlucky day? are there certain things you avoid? why is a young stevie wonder pictured above?

Groundhog Day 2015

do sonny and cher play on your radio every morning? do you step into that big icy pothole every time you cross the street? do you smash your alarm clock, only to find it in perfect working order when you wake up? it must be groundhog day. and you need to change your ways.

Let's Be Careful Out There

just a gentle reminder to drive a little slower on the white stuff while heading to homer's to drink the black stuff today. let's be careful out there.

Surreal Compliments

i knew that i was scheduled to open homer's this morning, that's why i had trouble getting to sleep last night. following the advice of an old friend, i did something boring: i read old blog posts. the very first one i ever posted on davidcedillo.com referenced the surreal compliment generator. if you click on it you will read surreal compliments such as "you are truly a wristwatch in a world of lumps." it's good to know that website is still around.

Just Down The Street

kitch fairman is a hair stylist just down the street from homer's. salon kitch, is the only place where you can get styled, play marimba, and relax to vintage vinyl.

In The Not Too Distant Future

last summer i received a grant for an art project that invited people join me at the snack bar to play vegetables in between movies at a local drive-in theater. in february we're going to try this @ homer's in between educational film shorts. check back for more details.

Saving The World...

one of our regular customers asked jarred if he knew about a book that tells the story of homer's. then jarred sent a text asking me the same question. here is what i told him: jim mathis wrote a book 10 years ago called saving the world one latté at a time. it explains how this place came into existence. if you are wondering why the coffeehouse is called homer's and not jim's, read the book!

Off The Clock Shenanigans

We Know How To Party

here's nate, chloé, and becca last week when they helped out @ jeff todd's new year's eve bash. the three homer's baristas greeted everyone who came to the party, took names for the electric guitar giveaway, and danced the night away when no one was looking.

Happy New Year... Still?

yesterday was new year's day, and today is the anti-climactic day after... do you still wish everyone a happy new year? probably not the people you already said it to, but what about the people you haven't seen in the last few days? tell a barista if you still say happy new year after january 1st or not, and then get double punches toward a free drink!
